Former professional wrestler Dave Bautista said this week that he will not return as Drax the Destroyer after wrapping up filming for ”Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

  • Bautista told IGN the upcoming third “Guardians of the Galaxy” film is “probably going to be the end of Drax.”

That sounds a little ambiguous, and maybe like a teaser that Drax will die in the upcoming film. But Bautista defended his position on social media in the days after the interview.

  • “Drax isn’t going anywhere. He just won’t be played by this dude!”

“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn responded to the idea that Bautista could be replaced, suggesting that this will really be the end of Drax.

  • “There’s no Drax for me without you, buddy! You ARE the MCU’s Drax the Destroyer and, as far as I’m concerned, could never be replaced,” Gunn wrote. “And you have the right to do whatever you want with your acting choices!”

Bautista then responded to Gunn, saying, “And there’s no Drax for me without you brother! #EndOfAJourney. I love you dude!”

According to Insider, there were plans for Drax and Mantis to have their own spinoff film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it appears nothing materialized out of the idea.

  • “There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film,” Bautista said, according to Insider. “It was really because it was James Gunn’s idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven’t heard any follow-up from the studio. I don’t think they’re very interested, or it doesn’t fit into the way they have things mapped out.”
