Dogecoin fans took to social media to show support for Dogecoin in the wake of a recent decision by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to stop accepting Bitcoin for Tesla.

What did Elon Musk say?

Musk announced Wednesday night that Tesla would no longer accept Bitcoin as a form of payment because of environmental concerns, BBC News reports.

  • Musk tweeted: “We are concerned about rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel.”
  • “Cryptocurrency is a good idea ... but this cannot come at great cost to the environment.”

Social media hype

Dogecoin fans took to social media to share support over Dogecoin replacing Bitcoin through the hashtag #Doge4Tesla.

There was another hashtag soon after called #DontBuyTesla, which was drummed up by the Bitcoin community as a response to Musk’s decision.

Part of the hype for a Dogecoin, Tesla linkup is inspired by Musk himself. On Tuesday, Musk created a poll on Twitter that asked if Tesla should accept Doge. The poll had 3.9 million votes, with 78.2% saying “Yes.” So the majority of Musk’s followers feel Tesla should accept Doge.
