High school baseball: 6A/5A state tournament roundup from Thursday’s games

6A second round

American Fork 15, Corner Canyon 1

American Fork shut down Corner Canyon in five innings, scoring 15 runs off of 12 hits. Ryder Robinson had three RBIs and one double. Easton Jones also had four RBIs with a double.

Bingham 8, West Jordan 2

Maxton Peck had two RBIs and a triple while Brady Maylett took the win on the mound as Bingham beat West Jordan in Game 1 of the 6A second round series.

Riverton 5, Taylorsville 1

Sam Beck went 3 for 3 with a triple and and RBI and then on the mound he went six innings and struck out 10 while only allowing three hits as Riverton beat Taylorsville in Game 1 of the 6A first round series.

Layton 6, Davis 2

Cam Day homered and then on the mound threw another masterful performance to lead Layton past region foe Davis in Game 1 of the 6A second round series.

Jordan 6, Northridge 1

Ethan He brought in three runs for the Beetdiggers who took down Northridge after falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Jordan didn’t have any big innings, but getting a single run across in five of six frames proved to be enough.

Lone Peak 6, Weber 5

Lone Peak scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead and the win over Weber. Gage Easton had two doubles while Berk Barnes and Chris Billings each added a double in the victory for the Knights.

Fremont 14, Skyridge 0

The 10th-seeded Silverwolves dismantled Skyridge in the opening game of the two teams’ best-of-three series. Fremont recorded 17 hits and rattled off seven runs in the sixth inning.

Pleasant Grove 14, Westlake 3

Pleasant Grove took care of business in Game 1 of their best-of-three series against the Thunder. The Vikings scored multiple runs all four times they got up to bat, including an eight-run third frame that put the game out of reach. Kyle Lester hit a double and home run on his way to three RBIs while Jordan Pace added two and a great pitching performance.


5A third round

Salem Hills 10, Brighton 0

Stone Cushing had two RBIs, a home run and the win on the mound to help Salem Hills come away with the shutout in Game 1 against Brighton in the 5A third round.

Murray 3, Spanish Fork 0

Ian Winterhalder pitched seven innings of shutout baseball by striking out seven and only allowing three hits as Murray won Game 1 of the 5A third round series. Austin Carter did most of the damage at the plate for the Spartans going 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Maple Mountain 3, Bountiful 1

Maple Mountain scored two runs in the first inning and held that lead through a hard fought defensive battle in a game that featured just seven total hits. Cooper Littledike brought in two runs while it was Wally Averett’s dominant pitching performance that earned the win.

Timpanogos 11, Provo 1

Billy Bird doubled, homered and drove in four runs as Timpanogos rolled past Provo for the Game 1 win in the 5A third round series. Jackson Bird also added two RBIs.

Orem 4, Cottonwood 1

Luke Kimmel struck out eight and only allowed three hits as Orem knocked off Cottonwood in Game 1 of the third-round series. Taylor Gill hit a solo homer for the Tigers while Hayden Hixson went 2 for 3 with a triple.

Woods Cross 3, Skyline 1

Blake Stanger hit a double and took the win on the mound as Woods Cross defeated Skyline in Game 1 of the 5A third-round series.

Farmington 7, Mountain Ridge 6

Farmington scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally past Mountain Ridge for the Game 1 win in the 5A third-round series.

Olympus 10, Wasatch 4

Ashton Johnson doubled and drove in three runs, with Jaxson Fullmer and Corbin Sanchez also driving in two runs as the Titans took care of business in Game 1 of its 5A third-round series with Wasatch.
