On Monday night, longtime “SportsCenter” anchor Kenny Mayne hosted his final show, and among the guests he interviewed was disgruntled Green Bay Packers MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
What happened
The 11-minute interview was mostly lighthearted as the two reminisced about experiences they’ve shared together over the years and traded jokes and barbs about various topics.
What Rodgers said about Love
A little more than halfway through the interview, things got a little more serious, and Mayne straight up asked Rodgers, “Are you demanding a trade?” Rodgers took the opportunity to answer about Jordan Love, the former Utah State Aggies quarterback whom the Packers rather surprisingly took with the 26th pick of the 2020 NFL draft.
“With my situation, look, it’s never been about the draft pick, picking Jordan,” Rodgers said. “I love Jordan. He’s a great kid. A lot of fun to work together.”
Rather, Rodgers said his unhappiness has to do with shifts in philosophy within the Green Bay organization.
Why it matters
Rodgers leaving Green Bay for a new team would cause a monumental shift in the NFL given that he is the reigning MVP, and it would certainly impact Love’s future a great deal, as he could become the Packers’ starting signal-caller or sit behind another quarterback if Green Bay gets one in exchange for Rodgers.
Where do things stand now?
ESPN reported Monday that, unsurprisingly, Rodgers was not at organized team activities (OTAs) to start the week. Green Bay last week signed two quarterbacks, Blake Bortles and Kurt Benkert, to compete alongside Love.
