Finally, the wait is over.
Utah opens the 2021 season Thursday (5:30 p.m. MDT, Pac-12 Network) at home against Weber State.
Is this the year that Utah breaks through and wins the Pac-12 championship?
After a frustrating, strange 2020 season marked by COVID-19, the Utes can’t wait to kick things off.
“It’s going to be great to get our fans back in there. I’m excited about the new addition to the stadium. The fans will love it,” said coach Kyle Whittingham. “I’m excited to see what kind of team we’ve got … and find out where we’re at as a football team.”
5: Total number of games played last year by Utah, posting a 3-2 record.
12: Number of regular-season games on the 2021 schedule.
5: Total touchdowns accounted for by former Ute QB Tyler Huntley — four passing and one rushing — while playing nearly the entire preseason game and completing 24 of 33 passes for 285 yards with the Baltimore Ravens.

But what about the pandemic? The numbers are worse this year than they were last year — so why are sports going ahead anyway? What has changed? I find it so amusing that last year everything had to be shut down — but this year the party is on — full steam ahead. I will be interested to see if the liberal conferences (like the Pac-12) will stay open or will they cave to pandemic fear-mongering and shut back down like year?
If only (Andy) Ludwig would actually incorporate them into the offense as they should be sometimes he has not given the TEs the looks or opportunities they need or deserve. Hopefully he keeps notes and corrects this very talented group.
