Valentine’s Day is less than a month away, and now we’re getting an idea of the country’s favorite romantic comedies.

The news: A new report from USDish looked into each state’s favorite romantic comedy.

The national winners: Both “Clueless” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” topped the list across the country, each of them ranking as the top romantic comedies in 12 states.

  • “Father of the Bride” finished second with 10 states.

Utah’s winner: “You’ve Got Mail” topped the list in Utah.

The film also ranked high in Kansas, South Dakota and West Virginia.

The other big films: “Notting Hill” won out in one location — the District of Columbia.

  • “Pretty Woman” was named the top film only in Mississippi and New York.
  • “The Wedding Singer” topped the list in seven states.

The method: USDish created the list based on romantic comedies that debuted from 1990-1999, according to Ranker. The team then put these films into Google Trends to see search volume by each state in the last year.

Flashback: In 2015, a survey from CableTV.com found “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” was the most popular romantic comedy film in the Beehive State. Utah was the only state that ranked the film as the most popular, as I reported for the Deseret News.

The bigger picture: Romantic comedies have been on the decline in recent years, as the films have gone from being “a cheeky, charming and generally family-friendly gem among Hollywood films to becoming the formulaic, sex-filled cash cows of the industry,” as Hillary Bowler wrote for the Deseret News.
