LAS VEGAS — Andy Reid the gambler showed up Sunday night in Las Vegas.

With the clock running in overtime and the Kansas City Chiefs down three, Patrick Mahomes cooly hit Mecole Hardman for a 3-yard touchdown pass to give the Chiefs a 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl.

That touchdown gave Reid three Super wins as a head coach. He became just the fifth coach to accomplish that feat.

Kansas City also won back-to-back Super Bowls, the first time that has happened in 19 years.

Overtime

Chiefs 25, 49ers 22

0:03 — With the clock running, Patrick Mahomes calmly hit Mecole Hardman for a 3-yard touchdown to win Super Bowl LVIII.

7:22 — The 49ers took the lead in overtime with Jake Moody’s third field goal of the night, a 27-yarder.

San Francisco moved the ball behind some nice plays from Christian McCaffrey, though the drive nearly stalled early before a Kansas City holding call on third down gave the 49ers new life.

Fourth quarter

49ers 19, Chiefs 19

0:03 — Harrison Butker made a 29-yard field goal to cap a clutch Chiefs drive, and we’re headed to overtime in Super Bowl LVIII.

Kansas City converted a third-and-2 with under a minute to play, then Travis Kelce beat Fred Warner in coverage for a 23-yard gain to the 49ers 11.

Warner recovered on the next play, though, knocking away a pass in the end zone to Kelce that would have won it.

1:53 — The 49ers are back ahead are rookie Jake Moody made his second 50-plus yard field goal, this one from 53 yards.

5:46 — We’re tied again after Harrison Butker’s third field goal of the game, a 24-yarder.

Kansas City drove to the San Francisco 3 but the 49ers defense buckled down inside the 5.

11:22 — San Francisco responded quickly with a touchdown drive of its own, capped by a 10-yard TD pass to Jauan Jennings. The drive was extended after the 49ers converted a fourth-and-3 at the Kansas City 15.

Third quarter

Chiefs 13, 49ers 10

2:28 — Kansas City took its first lead, thanks to a muffed punt from San Francisco. The Chiefs recovered at the 49ers 16, and on the next play, Patrick Mahomes found Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a touchdown pass.

5:01 — Harrison Butker just bested Jake Moody’s Super Bowl record long field goal, hitting a new long from 57 yards to make it a four-point game.

13:30 — The Chiefs started the second half with a turnover, as the 49ers’ Ji’Ayir Brown intercepted Patrick Mahomes when he threw into coverage.

San Francisco couldn’t do anything with it, though, as punted the ball back.

Second quarter

49ers 10, Chiefs 3

0:20 — The Chiefs finally get on the board with a 28-yard Harrison Butker field goal but the Sam Francisco defense held strong inside the red zone to force the field goal.

4:23 — The 49ers made it a two-score game with a double-pass touchdown on third down. Brock Purdy threw backwards to Jauan Jennings, who then threw back across the field to Christian McCaffrey, who darted 21 yards for a score.

12:09 — Now Kansas Coty has its own turnover. Isiah Pacheco is stripped inside the 49ers 20 after Patrick Mahomes threw an absolute dime to Mecole Hardman for 52 yards to the 49ers 9.

14:48 — San Francisco strikes first on a 55-yard Jake Moody field goal to make it 3-0 49ers. That is the longest field goal in Super Bowl history.

The 49ers drove 41 yards before their drive stalled.

First quarter

49ers 0, Chiefs 0

Even though Sam Francisco has 125 yards to Kansas City’s 16, it’s a scoreless game after one quarter.

The 49ers’ fumble on the opening drive played a big factor.

12:15 — The first big play came when San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey was stripped of the ball on the game’s opening possession and Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis recovered at the Kansas City 27.ed at the Kansas City 27.

The Chiefs went three and out, though, after the turnover.
