A recent study published by the Lighthouse Dental Centre found that Utah is the fifth-healthiest state in the United States.
The report looked at information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including air pollution, obesity prevalence, exercise and activity levels, diet, sleep habits, use of tobacco and alcohol, and the prevalence of certain health conditions.
The study then compiled that information and used it to award each state a final score out of 100.
Here are the top 10 healthiest states in America, according to the report.
1. Colorado
Colorado was rated the highest with a final score of 80. It scored well in each of the categories but stood out in activity level and sleep habits — over 80% of adults in Colorado participate in physical leisure-time activities, and over 70% reported getting more than seven hours of sleep per night.
2. Hawaii
Coming in at a close second, Hawaii scored 79.70. Hawaii has the best air quality of any state on the list and also boasts the lowest rates of cancer, obesity, depression and coronary heart disease.
3. Vermont
With a score of 79.1, Vermont is right behind Colorado and Hawaii. Vermont residents reported eating their fruits and veggies, and it pays off — the state has the lowest rate of high cholesterol in the top 10 states, although Montana actually had the lowest cholesterol overall.
4. New Hampshire
This New England state scored 75.80 overall and has the third-best air quality of any state in the U.S.
5. Utah
Utah scored 75.70. The state rates well across the categories, but stands out for having the lowest numbers of adults who report smoking and binge drinking. According to the study, Utah has one of the highest ages of life expectancy — 80.6, compared to the national average of 76.1 — and has a low prevalence of chronic diseases.
6. Massachussetts
This state scored 74.7, with healthy reports across all categories.
7. Connecticut
Connecticut scored 73.9. This state has the nation’s third-smallest percentage of smokers.
8. Minnesota
Minnesota scored 72.8 and stood out in two categories: It has the country’s sixth-highest number of binge drinkers and the second-lowest percentage of adults with tooth loss.
9. Washington
With 72.7, Washington is right behind Minnesota. Although markers for physical health are positive across the board, the state has the fourth-worst rate of depression in the country.
10. California
California rounds out the top 10 with 72.50. It would have scored much better were it not for its air quality, which is actually the worst in the nation, according to the CDC’s data.
What are the least healthy states in America?
The 10 worst-ranking states in the study were Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. West Virginia ranked last, with an overall score of 40.
