Deseret Magazine writer Natalia Galicza has been named a finalist for the National Magazine Awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Galicza was selected as a finalist in the feature writing contest for her story Alone, which appeared in the June 2024 issue of Deseret Magazine. The piece tackles the complexities and the future of solitary confinement.
“Journalism, at its best, gives voice to the voiceless,” said Deseret Magazine editor Jesse Hyde. “Natalia’s reporting for this story not only brings attention to the personal toll of prolonged isolation but also underscores the broader societal implications. Hopefully it can foster dialogue in our communities about a community of people we often forget.”

The ASME National Magazine Awards are among the most prestigious journalism awards programs in the United States. The National Magazine Awards are awarded in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Other finalists in this category come from Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and The Washington Post.
The finalists for the 60th annual National Magazine Awards were announced on Feb. 13. ASME will name the winners of the 2025 awards on Thursday, April 10.
