The Wallace House Center for Journalists and the University of Michigan announced the 2026 Livingston Awards finalists.

The Livingston Awards for Young Journalists, established in 1981, recognizes the reporting and careers of journalists under the age of 35.

Deseret Magazine writer Ethan Bauer has been selected as a 2026 finalist in Excellence in National Reporting for his article “Price of Redemption,” which appeared in the December issue of the Deseret Magazine.

Bauer’s piece delves into the unique relationship between a man charged with murder at 14 and the judge who sentenced him. A redemption story 30 years in the making.

This is Bauer’s second nomination, he was also a finalist in 2024.

“A hallmark of Ethan’s work is curiosity and compassion,” said Jesse Hyde, editor of Deseret Magazine. “By focusing on the long term consequences of well meaning, but flawed, aspects of our criminal justice system, he’s able to show how accountability and mercy collide in real lives. We’re thrilled to see his work once again honored by the Livingston Awards.”

This also marks the third time Deseret Magazine has been named as a finalist since the magazine launched in 2021.

This year’s winners will be announced June 9, 2026, at an awards ceremony in New York City.
