WEST JORDAN — Nine police officers have been placed on standard paid administrative leave following an hours-long standoff with a barricaded man in West Jordan that started as a domestic violence investigation and ended Tuesday night with the man being shot and killed.
Officers were called to a house, 1889 W. 7265 South, about 4:15 p.m. after receiving reports of an argument between several people, one of whom had a gun, according to West Jordan Deputy Police Chief Jeremy Robertson. A SWAT team was called to the scene.
Five people were initially in the house when officers arrived. Four were able to get out safely during the ensuing standoff as police attempted to negotiate with the man inside. West Jordan police said Wednesday the investigation into the relationships between all five people was ongoing.
About 9:30 p.m., SWAT team members entered the house after obtaining a search warrant. Contact was made with the barricaded man and shots were fired, West Jordan police said. The barricaded man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other information about what prompted the police to shoot has been released.
Eight officers from the West Jordan Police Department and one Utah Highway Patrol trooper — all members of the joint SWAT team — fired their weapons as the warrant was being served and have been placed on paid administrative leave, police confirmed Wednesday.
The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released. The Unified Police Department is investigating the police shooting.
