Murray High School was evacuated Friday due to a fire in the building.

The fire started near the wood shop before it was extinguished, according to the school district.

After being evacuated to a safe area, students at the school, 5440 S. State, were dismissed for the remainder of the day.

“Parents are invited to pick up their student on Hillcrest Drive, which is just to the west of the football field. Students are also being directed to not return to the campus until Murray City Fire Department provides an all-clear for people to safely return. We thank our Murray emergency responders for their swift and professional response today,” the district said.

Murray Fire Chief Joey Mittelman said that at this point, the cause of the fire is unknown and that it will take “a day or two to break it down and investigate it.” Mittelman also didn’t have an estimate for the extent of the damage.

The investigation will be a joint operation between Murray fire and the Utah state fire marshal, Mittelman said.

Murray City School District Superintendent Jennifer Covington said she anticipates school will resume Monday, but encouraged parents to monitor communication channels for any updates.
