George Carlin, who died unexpectedly on Sunday at the age of 71, is remembered in some quarters for his R-rated language. But my own memories of him are considerably different.
I remember him on "The Flip Wilson Show" and "Saturday Night Live" in the 1970s. He was hilarious and, particularly on "Flip Wilson," he couldn't so much as utter a word that was even slightly off-color. Even at his most uncensored, Carlin was not only hilarious but offered real insight on a variety of issues.
And I remember interviewing him by phone back in the 1990s. Carlin was soft-spoken, smart and couldn't have been kinder to me.
