“The Batman” has been much in the news this week with casting decisions.
On Thursday, the film announced that Paul Dano will star as the Riddler in the upcoming Warners Bros. film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Dano will play the character Edward Nashton, who adopts the Riddler persona.
Frank Gorshin and John Astin played the Riddler in the 1960s Batman TV series. Jim Carrey played him in the 1995 film “Batman Forever.”
Who is Dano?: Dano recently received an Emmy nomination for his work in “Escape at Dannemora.” He previously starred in “12 Years a Slave,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Okja.”
What about Jonah Hill?: Jonah Hill was rumored to play the Riddler in the upcoming film (there was also a rumor he would play the Penguin). But a dispute over his salary reportedly broke down talks, according to CinemaBlend. Hill wanted $10 million for the role, which is more than the $5 million that Robert Pattinson is making for the movie.
Who is the Riddler?: The Riddler — real name Edward Nygma (or E. Nigma) — is a super-villain who dishes out riddles and clues to Batman, who is trying to catch the Riddler. He debuted in Detective Comics No. 140. Riddler briefly joined the good side of the fight “when he realized it was just as much fun to solve crimes as it was to commit them,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Catwoman?: The film cast Zoe Kravtiz for the Catwoman role earlier this week. Other actresses up for the role included Ana de Armas, Ella Balinska and Eiza González.
