Spotify launched a new app for children called Spotify Kids Wednesday, offering a free and safe space for children to listen to music, according to The Verge.

  • The app launched in Ireland only on Wednesday. It currently holds 6,000 tracks which have been curated and selected by Spotify editors.
  • The app will include songs from Disney soundtracks, tunes about dinosaurs and some children’s stories. There’s a good chance that “Baby Shark” will pop up in there too.
  • Parents can make the app suitable for “younger kids” — which will have the songs like “Baby Shark” and “A Whole New World” — or “older kids,” which will have songs from modern pop artists like Taylor Swift.

Here’s why: “Spotify editors are looking at more than whether a song contains foul language when determining if it’s an appropriate fit for this app. References to guns and violence, for example, could be disqualifying, too. Song selections will also change by region, with editors creating different playlists based on what’s popular in each area,” according to The Verge.

About the editors: These editors aren’t just random people. Per TechCrunch, the Spotify editors have a history of working with brands such as Nickelodeon, Disney, Discovery Kids and Universal Pictures. Some also worked with a program called BookBeat, which is a kids-focused audio streaming service.

Cost: The app will be available to Premium Family subscribers, which costs $14.99 on its own, when the app rolls out to more markets, according to CNET.
