The writing credits for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” references a writer who made headlines for being axed from his writing duties during production.
What happened: The Writers Guild of America exclusively told Collider that the writing credits for the final film in the Skywalker Saga would include “Chris Terrio & J.J. Abrams,” a sign that the two worked on the screenplay together.
- The film will include a “based on characters created by George Lucas” credit.
- But the credits will also have a line that reads, “Story by Derek Connolly & Colin Trevorrow and Chris Terrio & J. J. Abrams.”
Why it matters: Trevorrow was originally going to be a co-writer on the movie before he was let go, as reported by the Deseret News. Abrams took over writing duties from there.
- “Which means that the WGA likely decided some of what Trevorrow and Connolly were originally planning for the film made it into the final product. It also means that they will receive a good amount of residuals, which is a pretty nice consolation prize for not seeing the final film through,” according to Collider.
Another note: Abrams told Fast Company that he started the new film with “no script,” which would be a sign that Trevorrow didn’t put together any product for the new film.
Release date: “The Rise of Skywalker” will drop on Dec. 20.
