SALT LAKE CITY — Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin” may get a sequel in the near future, and it will probably be an original story.

Producer Dan Lin told ComicBook.com that any follow-up to “Aladdin” would be an original story that uses some details from previous material, like “The Return of Jafar” and “Aladdin and the King of Thieves,” which were two direct-to-video sequels based on the original animation “Aladdin.”

“If I told you the fans would go crazy,” Lin told ComicBook.com. “It’s just too early for me to reveal. But just know that we’re looking at a lot of different source material and it’s not going to be based on one singular source, but we’re going to take the best of everything that’s been done before and create something fresh and new.”

He said Disney is in talks for a sequel that would be the beginning of a franchise of “Aladdin” films. Lin said fans have been voicing their appreciation to him about the new movie, which makes him interested in bringing it back for another round.

“We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original ‘Aladdin’ movie and not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that’s been done before,” he said. “We’re really looking at what’s been done before in the past and the home video, and there’s just more story to tell with the underlying materials. So without giving away too much, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise.”
