SALT LAKE CITY — Spider-Man’s silver screen career is looking considerably different, but Tom Holland is still excited to play the hero.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the D23 Expo, Holland noted he’s still planning on playing Spider-Man for Sony, despite the studio’s fallout with Disney and Marvel, which likely ends the character’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the foreseeable future.

“It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life,” Holland said. “It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also noted Spider-Man’s MCU appearances were always meant to be finite, but he’s grateful he got to work with the character, according to Collider.

“It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that,” Feige said.

And while Happy Hogan actor Jon Favreau told Variety he thinks Sony and Disney will come to terms at some point. Possibly the best insight into the issue comes from actor Jeff Goldblum, which is a piece of performance art in and of itself:

Holland’s most recent appearance as Spider-Man was in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which was firmly rooted in the MCU and dealt with the fallout of “Avengers: Endgame.” It’s likely most, if not all, of those threads will have to be abandoned for a third outing.

But Polygon does note there are enough “Spider-Man” spinoff movies — like “Venom 2” — in development that Peter Parker will probably have plenty of company. However, Deadline reports Holland’s next “Spider-Man” outing may not include “Far From Home” director Jon Watts, who is reportedly in talks with Marvel to take over another MCU property.
