SALT LAKE CITY — Anthony Mackie says he hasn’t actually been fitted for a Captain America suit yet.

In an interview with MTV News at D23, Mackie denied he had previously said he was fitted for a Captain America suit, rather than the Falcon costume he’s worn since debuting in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” He also reinforced previous comments that he won’t take on Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) name in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

“I don’t even know if the suit’s in the show. And it’s funny because I didn’t have a fitting for the suit. I just had my fitting and everybody was, yeah. Everybody was like, ‘Oh, you had a fitting of your suit!’ And I was like, I never said I had a fitting for the suit. Go back to the tape, I said I had my first fitting,” Mackie said to MTV.

So let’s go back to the tape. If you go back to Mackie’s July interview with MTV, the actor said he had been fitted for “a suit.” but considering he was asked when he’ll wear a Captain America costume, his recent comments seem a little suspicious.

Mackie also told Variety at D23 he doesn’t plan on changing identities any time soon. “I am The Falcon, I will always be The Falcon. The moniker will stay the same,” he told Variety.

Precedent for Sam Wilson taking on the patriotic mantle has existed for a while in the comics. According to Nerdist, the character became the All-New Cap in 2014 after Rogers becomes an old man through comic book shenanigans.

In “Avengers: Endgame,” Rogers passes on his shield to Wilson, indicating the younger hero would become Captain America. IGN notes there were also plans for Falcon to appear as Captain America at one point in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” but it appears those plans have been rolled back for now.

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” stars Mackie as Falcon and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier and will arrive on Disney Plus sometime in Fall 2020.
