“Toy Story 4” had an alternative ending that would have significantly changed the show’s narrative arc.
In the film’s actual ending, Woody decided to become a lost toy and live the rest of his life out in the real world with Bo Peep. This was quite a change for Woody, who, throughout the entire “Toy Story” series, wanted to be the primary toy of Andy and, in the fourth movie, his new owner Bonnie.
But in the alternate ending, Bo Peep realizes that “the kid from the store” — who the villainous Gabby Gabby tried to attract — is the right kid for her, which encourages Bo Peep to leave the road and return to the arms of a child, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“She’s the one,” Bo Peep said, according to Gizmodo. “I feel a connection again, Woody, like I’m supposed to be her toy.”
But the alternate ending doesn’t fit the narrative structure of the film.
“Still, it’s curious that there was once upon a time a world in which Bo did opt to go back to a kid in the end — and what, in turn, would that have meant for Woody, his decision, and thus the future of the ‘Toy Story’ series itself,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
