The first trailer for the upcoming superhero film “Morbius” dropped Monday, and it features a popular Marvel Cinematic Universe character.
What’s going on: The “Morbius” trailer gives us our first look at the mysterious Marvel character, who will be played by Jared Leto. The character Morbius is a tortured vampire-like creature who is more an anti-hero, like “Venom.” The character is popular in the Spider-Man comic book series.
- The trailer, which you can see below, includes Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson and, yes, Michael Keaton, who reprises his role as Vulture from “Spiderman: Homecoming.”
- Per AV Club: “‘Morbius’ has never been our most anticipated Marvel property, but bringing back Michael Keaton’s Vulture — likely as Morbius’ gateway into the dark side — has our not-so-Spidey senses tingling.”
Even more: The trailer includes a scene where Morbius walks near a poster of Spider-Man, which has the word “murderer” spray-painted on top of it, according to Collider. At the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Spider-Man’s identity is exposed and he is labeled a murderer, having believed to have killed Mysterio.
What it means: Keaton’s appearance as Vulture shows that the Sony cinematic universe of comic book villains — which includes Venom from last year’s “Venom” — will connect with the events of the MCU. And the references to Spider-Man only backup the idea.
- It’s unclear what Sony and Marvel cooked up for this film, but they appear to be working in tandem when it comes to using the Spider-Man character.
