“Avengers: Endgame” and “Joker” are both comic book movies, and they dominated 2019 in two different ways.
What’s going on: The Academy Awards released their nominations Monday morning, revealing that “Joker” had the most nominations of the year with 11 nods, according to BBC News.
Meanwhile: “Avengers: Endgame,” which is also a movie based off comic book characters, dominated the box office, becoming the highest grossing film of the 2019 and of all time.
That said: Comic book movies don’t necessarily dominate award seasons. “Endgame” didn’t receive a best picture nomination despite the high-grossing numbers. “Endgame” did receive a nomination for best visual effects, though.
- “Black Panther” was nominated for best picture in 2018 but it was mostly tied to the film’s cinema art.
- The same can be said for “Joker.” The film, which had its own swing of controversies, was believed to be artful cinema, which gave it momentum to be nominated.
- According to ScreenRant:
“Even if the Academy tried to change its formula and prove that it can be more inclusive and appreciate all types of art in cinema by nominating ‘Black Panther’ for best picture in 2019, it still has a long, long way to go. Until the Oscars decide to look beyond the established so-called “high art” and truly acknowledge the efforts and talent in other genres, their neglect of comic book movies in categories beyond technical ones will continue, and the ‘Joker’ will be the only comic book character to get any type of recognition.”
