Does your pet like music? Now might be the time to find out, as popular music streaming service Spotify announced Wednesday it has developed an algorithm to create “pawfect playlists” for you and your pets.

After conducting a survey that found 71% of pet owners play music for their pets, Spotify realized that pets and owners’ tastes could be combined for the optimal owner/pet music experience, according to Business Insider.

The survey also found that 8 in 10 pet owners believe their pets like music.

According to The Verge, the playlists will use the information about a pet’s personality and species, as well as the owners personal listening history to create a playlist tailored specifically for that pet.

The playlists include songs about cats for cats, songs featuring dogs for dogs. You get the idea.

How do you create the playlist?

  1. Log into your Spotify account and go to https://pets.byspotify.com/
  2. Choose what kind of pet you’d like to create the playlist for. The current options are: cat, dog, hamster, bird and even iguana.
  3. Tell them a bit about your pet. Are they energetic? Shy? Curious?
  4. Type in your pet’s name and even upload a photo to customize the playlist
  5. Play it for your pet and find out if they like it.

CNN reports that Spotify is also releasing a podcast for dogs as part of its new music for pets initiative. The “My Dog’s Favourite Podcast” trailer description says it’s “designed to calm and reassure your best friend.”

Animal psychologist Alex Benjamin of the University of York helped Spotify create the podcast. Benjamin told CNN he believes it really can help soothe pets, but not exactly through its own intrinsic value. Rather, it masks other sounds that might startle pets who were left alone.
