The next big “Fortnite” emote could come from TikTok, of all places.
What’s going on: Epic Games’ “Fortnite video game has partnered up with TikTok to find the next great emote — a celebration move within the game, like the floss dance.
- Epic announced a weeklong competition that asks gamers to perform a dance move on TikTok with the hashtag #EmoteRoyaleContest.
- Epic will select one move to be incorporated into the game.
Why it matters: “Fortnite” is looking to revive interest in its platform, targeting a social media app that’s popular among teenagers. “Fortnite and TikTok seem to be hitting the same audiences, so that move makes sense.
- And it allows “Fortnite” to add original dance moves to the game without worrying about copyright scandals, which have plagued the game in the past.
As The Verge puts it:
“Searching for dance moves on TikTok offers another way for Epic to keep conversations around Fortnite going. While the contest is only a week long, it means a week of people mentioning Fortnite alongside new dance moves in the hopes of breaking out, reminding TikTok users of another way they could be spending their time. It also offers Epic a cheap way to get a new dance move. Epic previously held a dance contest in 2018, but it asked for submissions on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.”
