Warning: Spoilers for “The Mandalorian” season 2’s premiere episode.
“The Mandalorian” released its second season premiere on Friday morning, bringing us back to a galaxy far, far away, and where the entire franchise began — Tatooine.
What happened:
The premiere episode, titled “Chapter 9 — The Marshal,” starts with the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and the Child (Baby Yoda) learning they have to travel to Tatooine to find another Mandalorian.
- Once they arrive, Mando meets Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), a marshal for the small mining settlement of Mos Pelgo.
- Cobb Vanth shows up wearing the body armor of a Mandalorian. But not just any Mandalorian — Boba Fett, the famous bounty hunter last seen in “Return of the Jedi.”
Vanth explains that he took the armor from an interaction with Jawas.
We see shots of this scene where Vanth lived in Mos Pelgo before a mining gang came through to take it over during the fall of the Galactic Empire. He then leaves Mos Pelgo without water or food. The Jawas find him, rescue him.
- He trades his belongings — including some stolen currency from the mining group — for the armor he sees in the Jawa ship.
In summary: Cobb Vanth is a marshal for Mos Pelgo, who teamed up with the Mandalorian to defeat the Krayt dragon. It’s unclear if we will see him again.
Flashback:
- Vanth has made an appearance in “Star Wars” before. He was mentioned in one of the “Star Wars: Aftermath” book series, which were released as tie-in novels to the sequel trilogy. He was described as someone who defends people on Tatooine from villains and criminals.
