Disney’s newest film will be coming to a living room near you much sooner than expected.
“Raya and the Last Dragon” will now premiere on Disney Plus and movie theaters on the same day, Variety reported on Thursday.
Disney will make the animated film available on Premier Access, similar to its release of “Mulan” on the streaming service — meaning that only subscribers will be able to watch the film, after paying a $30 rental fee, according to Variety.
The news comes a week after Warner Bros. announced that all new films in 2021 would be released on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, which the Deseret News reported. “Wonder Woman 1984,” which will be released on Dec. 25, also debuts at the same time on the streaming service and in theaters.
Disney has previously released films intended for theaters solely to Disney Plus, including “Mulan,” “Artemis Fowl” and the upcoming “Soul” (which debuts on Dec. 25).
“Raya and the Last Dragon” features the voices of Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina, and is set in the fictional southeast Asian-inspired world Kumandra, where a young girl goes on a quest to find the last dragon in order to save her kingdom.
The film will be available to watch in theaters and on Disney Plus March 5, 2021.
