Harrison Ford is reprising his iconic role as the adventurer Indiana Jones — but maybe for the last time.
The upcoming “Indiana Jones 5” will be the final installment starring the 78-year-old actor, according to BBC News.
The news was announced during Disney’s Investor Day presentation Thursday by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who revealed that the new film would be the “fifth and final” of the series, according to the website Digital Spy.
Disney also confirmed Thursday that James Mangold (director of “Ford v. Ferrari”) would be directing the upcoming film.
“Indiana Jones 5” is currently in preproduction and is set to be released in July 2022, according to a tweet from Disney.
Although other actors (including Chris Pratt) have been discussed to take on an “Indiana Jones” reboot, Ford has previously said he has no interest in seeing another actor in the role.
“Nobody is going to be Indiana Jones, don’t you get it?” Ford said in an interview last year, according to the Deseret News. “I’m Indiana Jones. When I’m gone, he’s gone. It’s easy.”
Last month, Ford also paid tribute to his “Indiana Jones” co-star Sean Connery, who played Ford’s father in the third movie and passed away in November.
“He was my father … not in life … but in ‘Indy 3,’” said Ford in a statement to Variety. “You don’t know pleasure until someone pays you to take Sean Connery for a ride in the side car of a Russian motorcycle bouncing along a bumpy, twisty mountain trail and getting to watch him squirm. ... If he’s in heaven, I hope they have golf courses. Rest in peace, dear friend.”
