Kobe Bryant fans expressed concern and rage after they were added to a waitlist after trying to purchase tickets to the upcoming public memorial service dedicated to the Los Angeles Lakers. And now, Ticketmaster has responded.

What happened

  • Fans were really upset with Ticketmaster after they were added to a waitlist for the Kobe Bryant memorial service despite registering for tickets, which I wrote about for the Deseret News.
  • Multiple reports suggested the ticket numbers exceeded the amount of available seats.

How did Ticketmaster respond?

  • Ticketmaster sent me the following statement: “There has been an outpouring of love and support from hundreds of thousands of fans around the world hoping to attend ‘A Celebration of Life for Kobe and Gianna Bryant’ on February 24th. This has naturally led to verified fan registrations far exceeding ticket supply. Those registered and verified have been randomly selected to receive confirmation codes for a chance to purchase tickets. All other fans received a waitlist notification and will be contacted should tickets become available. All proceeds will be donated directly to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, whose mission is to further Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s legacy in youth sports.”

Some additional details:

  • According to Ticketmaster, tickets for the upcoming event will be issued through digital means only.
  • The proceeds will be sent to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundaton, which are charities started by Kobe Bryant.
  • Ticketmaster has advised fans to download their tickets to their Apple Wallets when they arrive to the Staples Center.
  • Ticketmaster encouraged people to arrival early to the event.
  • The event will not be shown on screens outside of the Staples Center.
  • Ticketmaster has asked fans who don’t have tickets to not visit the Staples Center to keep the area safe.
