Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were released from the hospital in Australia this week and now remain in self quarantine as they look to battle the coronavirus, CNN reports.

What’s going on?

  • The couple’s son Chet Hanks made the announcement in a video posted to Instagram, according to The New York Times.
  • Chet Hanks said: “They’re still self-quarantined obviously, but they’re feeling a lot better so that’s a relief.”

A little back story:

  • The couple was diagnosed with the coronavirus last week.
  • Hanks wrote: “Hello folks. Rita Wilson and I want to thank everyone here Down Under who are taking such good care of us. We have COVID-19 and are in isolation so we do not spread it to anyone else.”
  • Hanks continued: “There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness. We are taking it one day at a time. There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no?”
  • The couple was in Australia for preproduction on a biopic about Elvis Presley. Hanks is set to place Col. Tom Parker, Presley’s manager, in the film, according to CNN.
  • Production on the film is suspended.

Why Hanks went viral

  • Hanks has been sharing updates about the couple’s status throughout the process. One shared update included a photo of Hanks’ breakfast, which included toast covered with Vegemite. Twitter roasted him over it, which I wrote about for the Deseret News.
