Captain Marvel may be the leader of the new Avengers team, but that doesn’t mean she’ll always be the hero.

What’s happening

Captain Marvel is reportedly under consideration to be made into a villain for the upcoming fifth “Avengers” film, which hasn’t been officially announced or given a release date yet, according to We Got This Covered, a news and rumors site for entertainment projects

Per WGTC: “the studio is taking a bit of inspiration from a recent arc in the comics where Captain Marvel turns evil and apparently, the plan is to have her possessed by an evil entity from space, similar to that of the Phoenix Force that Jean Grey from the X-Men had to deal with, making Carol extremely powerful, even more so than she is now.”

The storyline would be teased at the end of “Avengers 5” and then be a main storyline in “Captain Marvel 3,” according to the report.

This happened in the comic books

  • In the recent “Captain Marvel” comic book series, a new villain named Vox Supreme forced Captain Marvel to attack the Avengers.
  • According to ComicBookResource.com: “With the lives of countless Kree refugees on the line, Carol had no choice but to take those commands, so she concocted a plan to save her friends while still following orders. She hid them in the pocket dimension located inside Singularity and brought Vox Supreme something decoy clones created by a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. project.”
  • Captain Marvel ends up becoming a real monster, too, when she consumes serum that makes her into a version of a creature akin to Thor and She-Hulk, per CBR.

Other rumors:

  • Before anything like this happens, Marvel will release “Captain Marvel 2,” which is rumored to be a cosmic horror movie, according to Cosmic Book News.
  • The film would feature a group called the Sentient World Observation and Response Department (SWORD), which would look to fight a massive cosmic enemy, according to CBN.
  • Captain Marvel would then team up with a number of other heroes to take on enemies.
  • The new film will be released in 2022 as a part of Marvel’s Phase 5.
