Since being released digitally three weeks ago, “Trolls World Tour” has profited Universal Pictures more than the original film, “Trolls,” did during its five-month theatrical run in 2016, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Three days after the film was meant to hit the big screen, Decider reported that “Trolls World Tour” broke the previous record — held by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” — for the most successful opening weekend for a video-on-demand digital release.
“Trolls” made $153.7 million during its theatrical run. The sequel has made just under $100 million in the three weeks it’s been available through VOD, CNBC reports. Due to the profitability differences between box office and digital sales, Universal is pocketing the vast majority of the sequel’s $100 million revenue — in contrast to the $77 million it was able to take from “Trolls.”
A production company typically takes home roughly 50% of box office sales, and 80% of VOD rentals, Screenrant reports. At $19.99 a pop for a digital rental of “Trolls World Tour,” it’s no surprise Universal is raking in the profits.
The success of “Trolls World Tour” is a good sign for future VOD releases, Variety reports. Universal is already planning to release more films digitally while theaters are closed due to novel coronavirus. Many companies are following suit with films like “Scoob!” and “Artemis Fowl,” which is heading directly to Disney Plus.
