Earlier this week, a mystery countdown took over “Twilight” series author Stephenie Meyer’s website.

Fickle Fish Films, Stephenie Meyer’s production company, also posted the countdown to its social media, Yahoo! News reports, with a vague caption that merely directed fans right back to the countdown on Meyer’s site.

Five days, it began, then four, three, and now two — but what exactly is it counting down to?

According to CNN, nobody knows — except hopefully Meyer herself — but eager fans are speculating it could mean a sequel, prequel or even a new original story.

While Meyer is most famous for her four-book “Twilight” series, the author has also released two standalone books “The Host” and “The Chemist.”

Fans are speculating that the countdown could be announcing the long-anticipated arrival of “Midnight Sun,” Meyer’s re-write of the first “Twilight” novel from Edward Cullen’s perspective, which was shelved indefinitely back in 2008 when an incomplete manuscript was leaked to the public, according to People, but other fans are speculating it could be hinting at a sequel to her other two standalone novels.

To some fans, the fact that the countdown is accompanied by a starry night sky in the background is a clear hint that the sequel to Meyer’s sci-fi novel “The Host” is on its way, GMA News reports.

Despite eager guesses and internet sleuthing, it seems the only thing left to do is wait for the Arizona author’s announcement. Newser reports the countdown ends at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Monday, May 4.
