Sony still plans to release the PlayStation 5 during the 2020 holiday season despite the coronavirus pandemic.

What’s going on:

  • The company announced in its earnings release Wednesday that it would release the console. The company said it saw 14% lower gaming revenue year over year.
  • Sony said the PlayStation 5 will play a vital role in the company’s success.
  • “Regarding the launch of PlayStation 5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season,” Sony said in its report. “At this point in time major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios.”

Some context:

  • Microsoft has already confirmed that the Xbox Series X console will drop during the holiday 2020 season, too. But the software development could face a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Verge.
  • But Microsoft won’t release any platform-exclusive games in the short term, so there likely won’t be any concerns of churning out games in addition to the console, according to The Verge.
  • Sony will likely “prioritize at least some exclusive PS5 games to promote sales of the new console.”
