“Pirates of Caribbean 6” producer Jerry Bruckheimer says a draft of the new film is in the works. But the movie’s future remains unclear.

Bruckheimer told Collider in a new interview that the draft has not reached Disney yet.

“We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it,” Bruckheimer said. “We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”

There have been a number of reports over the last few months about the upcoming “Pirates” film, many of which revolve around who will star in the film.

There have been questions about whether Johnny Depp will return to play Jack Sparrow considering his recent legal issues. Depp has been the face of the franchise.

So will he return?

“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be,” Bruckheimer told Collider. “So, we’re going to have to see.”

Recent reports suggested that Disney had picked Karen Gillan (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Avengers: Endgame”) to star in the new film. The reports suggested the film would focus on Redd, the redheaded pirate seen in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at  Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

“She’s proven herself in big budget blockbusters already, so giving her the lead role in one makes all the sense in the world,” according to ComicBook.com.

Former “Pirates of the Caribbean” writer Ted Elliott and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin  were brought onto the project in October “to propel fresh wind into ‘Pirates,’ one of the largest-hauling film franchises of all time, which introduced hard-luck and hard-drinking pirate Jack Sparrow into Disney fandom and pop culture,” THR reported.
