Police arrested a man who had camped out at Walt Disney World’s Discovery Island, according to CNN. He reportedly told police he didn’t know he was trespassing.
- The man said the island reminded him of a “tropical paradise.”
- He had lived on the island since Monday or Tuesday last week.
- He was charged with a misdemeanor for trespassing on posted property. He posted bond. He will appear in court in June.
- Police officials in Orange County, Florida, spotted the man.
- CNN said: “To get to the island, he would have already passed no trespassing signs and two closed gates, the report said.”
Why it matters:
- Walt Disney World and Disneyland have been shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Walt Disney World has reportedly furloughed more than 40,000 employees in wake of the pandemic, as the Deseret News reported. Reports suggest the total number of furloughs for Disney is near 100,000.
Some trespassed into Disneyland
- Back in April, an 18-year-old was arrested for allegedly breaking into Disneyland despite the park’s closure. Jeremiah Smith, a resident of Anaheim, allegedly jumped over the gate into the backstage lot for California Adventure at Disneyland, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.
- KABC reports: “Police believe the suspect’s motive may have been to steal items or equipment from the construction site.”
