Hulu has added a new “Watch Party” feature — but it’s a little difficult to access for some.
What’s going on:
- Hulu added a new feature for some users that allows them to watch a single show or film in an online group. The feature adds a chat function on the right side of the screen.
- However, the feature is only available on Hulu.com in a web browser. Mobile viewers can not access it yet.
- It’s only available for ad-free Hulu accounts, too. So you’ll need to sign up for that pricier plan if you want to watch a movie with your friends.
- No voice chat or video option exist either.
- Per Mashable, the Hulu feature isn’t available with every movie,. For example, “John Wick 3” doesn’t work with it. But recent programming does work.
How it works
- To access the feature, visit the “details” page of any movie or television show you want to watch. Make a room and send out the link to your friends. There’s a button that allows people to click or pause the show when they need to leave and then resync it to match everyone else’s feed.
Some context
- In March, a Google Chrome extension titled “Netflix Party” went viral for allowing people to connect online so they could watch movies together while the country was social distancing, as I reported for the Deseret News.
