Marvel Entertainment’s next major crossover event is on the way, and a trailer for the spectacular just dropped online.

What’s going on:

  • “Empyre” — the crossover event that Marvel describes as “the legendary epic that will shatter the Marvel Universe” — dropped its first trailer Thursday.
  • The story focuses on Emperor Hulking, who has united the Kree and Skrull empires together into an alliance. Only the Avengers and the Fantastic Four can defeat the alliance and stop it from invading Earth. (For Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, the Kree and the Skrull were the warring factions seen in “Captain Marvel).
  • Watch the trailer below.

What to expect:

  • The trailer shows Captain Marvel wielding a weapon that looks like Thor’s hammer.
  • The trailer hints at a hero betraying everyone and enemies uniting.

Co-writer Dan Slott said: “The Kree/Skrull war is one of the deepest cuts in the Marvel cosmos. And whether you’re new to the Marvel Universe or have been a fan since the very beginning, ‘Empyre’ will touch on a part of this conflict you care about.”

Co-writer Al Ewing said: “The two star-spanning empires have kept each other in check for generations, keeping each other from getting too strong, so both of them aligning together after all this time is probably bad news. Some of the twists and turns we’ve got waiting for readers will be genuinely shocking.”
