Disneyland may be planning to reopen in mid-July but some of the theme park’s workers hope that isn’t the case.
What’s going on:
- A “chorus” of Disneyland employees have spoken out against reopening the park too soon, according to The Los Angeles Times.
- In fact, a dozen unions representing the 17,000 Disneyland employees wrote a letter to California Gov. Gavin Newsom this week, saying it is unsafe to reopen the park.
- The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions wrote in the letter: “Unfortunately, despite intensive talks with the company, we are not yet convinced that it is safe to reopen the parks on Disney’s rapid timetable.”
- The group celebrated Disney’s decision to pay worker salaries during the time of closure and for its plan to take temperatures for those at the workplace, according to ABC-7. But the group says some issues remain unsolved like plans for testing.
- The risks make employees less interested in reopening the park so soon.
Another petition rises
- People have signed a Change.org petition that calls of Disney not to reopen Disneyland too soon as well, as I wrote for the Deseret News.
- The petition reads: “Many people have lost loved ones due to this pandemic and by reopening the parks they are endangering cast members and guests to be exposed to COVID-19.”
- “The solution would be to reschedule Disneyland to reopen the parks at a later date when cases of COVID-19 drop and health officials state it is safer for everyone but to still practice social distancing.”
- The petition said a second wave could cause the park to close again.
- More than 41,000 people have signed the petition so far.
New health and safety measures
- Disneyland has revealed health and safety guidelines for its park ahead of its July 17 reopening, as I wrote about for the Deseret News. The park will require face coverings for employees and guests, as well as temperature checks for all who enter the park.
