A sequel to the hit Netflix film“Bird Box” is coming soon, first in book form and later as a motion picture.

  • “Bird Box” author Josh Malerman told Inverse that he has written a sequel to the novel “Bird Box”— titled “Malorie” — which takes place right after the events of the movie and book.
  • The book will be released on July 21.
  • The story will focus on Malorie, the character played by Sandra Bullock in the movie, and pick up right where the first movie and book ended.
  • Malerman said: “‘Malorie’ opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends. Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that.”
  • A sequel movie he said, is in development.
  • He added: “I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”

‘Bird Box’ controversy

  • “Bird Box” — which was watched by more than 45 million people on Netflix in its debut — came with some controversy. Specifically, the “Bird Box” challenge, which called for people to put on a blindfold and attempt to walk around their house or put on lipstick, which I wrote about for the Deseret News in 2019.
  • Netflix advised people not to participate in the challenge.
  • A teen driver in Utah crashed while doing the “Bird Box” challenge, as the Deseret News reported.
  • “It’s just outrageous that somebody would think to do that. This one, luckily, didn’t end in any injuries but easily could have. The stakes are just way too high to do something like that while you’re driving,” Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman told the Deseret News.
