Disney Plus saw a number of new downloads over the weekend so people could watch the new “Hamilton” film, according to multiple reports.

  • Data from the app download researcher firm Sensor Tower — revealed that Disney Plus saw a 64% bump in downloads compared to the week before “Hamilton” dropped, according to Yahoo Finance.
  • Similarly, Apptopia told Variety that Disney Plus saw a 72% spike in downloads during “Hamilton” weekend compared to the weekend average of the last four weekends.
  • Worldwide, app downloads jumped 46.6% higher than average, according to Variety.
  • “Hamilton” has been Disney’s biggest release in months since “Mulan” and “Black Widow” were delayed to later in the year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

No free trials, though

  • The downloads come as Disney Plus doesn’t offer any free trial promotion right now, which I reported for the Deseret News late last week. The service originally launched with a seven-day trial. That has now been eliminated for the time being.
  • Business Insider said: “It’s possible that Disney could decide to bring the free trial back at a later date.”
  • The lack of a free trial came during “Hamilton” weekend, which saw one of Broadway’s biggest plays come to the small screen.
