AMC Theatres won’t allow strangers to sit next to each other when it reopens this week, according to Variety.
What’s going on:
- Social media slammed AMC Theatres after images that showed people could sit next to each other in the theater leaked online.
- AMC Theatres said it would change its seating engine to block out one seat on either side of a party, providing space between strangers.
- The technology was not available when the tickets started going on sale.
- AMC will only allow 30% capacity in its theaters.
- Guests will be encouraged to embrace social distancing to keep the coronavirus from spreading inside. This could mean that guests don’t always sit in the same seat that they purchased, Variety reports.
Plans for reopening
AMC announced last week that it will reopen on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Tickets will cost $0.15 on Thursday as a “movies in 2020 at 1920 prices” promotion, as I wrote about for Deseret.com. These prices only apply on Aug. 20.
“We are thrilled to once again open our doors to American moviegoers who are looking for an opportunity to get out of their houses and apartments and escape into the magic of the movies. As our guests return on our first day of resumed operations on Aug. 20, we invite them to join us in celebrating a return to the movies, and in celebrating 100 years of AMC making smiles happen with movies at 1920 prices of only 15 cents each.” — Adam Aron, CEO and president of AMC Theatres
