Concert venues are gradually starting to reopen amid the pandemic, but most musicians continue to hold performances online.
Here are eight shows to watch from the comfort of your home — or car — this weekend.
FRIDAY
Tabernacle organists
- What: The five Tabernacle and Temple Square organists — Richard Elliott, Andrew Unsworth, Brian Mathias, Linda Margetts and Joseph Peeples — have virtually resumed their weekly recitals in a new online concert series called “Piping Up: Organ Concerts at Temple Square.”
- When: Weekly concerts stream Monday, Wednesday and Friday at noon.
- Where: Concerts stream on the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square’s YouTube channel and Facebook page, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints live watch page (broadcasts.ChurchofJesusChrist.org), and the choir’s website (thetabernaclechoir.org).

SATURDAY
Avett Brothers
Avett Brothers fans have two ways to watch the band this weekend.
- What: A PBS special titled “The Avett Brothers at Red Rocks” will begin airing Saturday night, showing the best of the band’s performance at the Colorado amphitheater last year.
- When: Aug. 29, times vary.
- Where: Here’s a list of PBS affiliates carrying the concert (Utah is not on the list).
- What: The Avett Brothers are also putting on their first show in six months Saturday, according to Fox 46 Charlotte. A day after the release of their album, “The Third Gleam,” the folk-rock band will be performing live on the Charlotte Motor Speedway. In drive-in style, the show will be broadcast on the Speedway’s 16,000 square-foot TV screen.
The band is also livestreaming the concert for those unable to attend in person.
- When: Aug. 29, 6:30 p.m. MDT. Online, the concert can be viewed for 48 hours.

Metallica
- What: Following in the footsteps of Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton, Metallica is the first heavy metal/rock band to join the Encore Drive-in Nights concert series. The filmed concert, which will feature music from the band’s 40-year career, marks Metallica’s first show since September 2019, the Deseret News previously reported.
- When: Aug. 29, times vary
- Where: Visit ticketmaster.com for a full list of theaters showing the concert. In Utah, the show will air at three drive-in theaters: West Valley City’s Redwood Drive-in; the Motor-Vu Theater in Tooele; and the Basin Drive-in in Mt. Pleasant, Sanpete County.
Lise Davidsen
- What: Rising opera star Lise Davidsen is performing in the Metropolitan Opera’s new live event series. The Norwegian singer will give a wide-ranging program featuring music from Sibelius, Grieg, Wagner, Strauss and more, according to a press release sent to the Deseret News.
- When: Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. MDT. Available for viewing 12 days after the performance.

SUNDAY
Pete Yorn
- What: Pete Yorn will be doing a live acoustic performance of his album, “Day I Forgot.”

“Performing live is one of my favorite things to do as an artist and since the start of the pandemic I’ve been looking for new ways to do that and connect with you, so I hope you tune in and enjoy,” Yorn wrote in a Facebook post.

Sierra Boggess
- What: Broadway star Sierra Boggess — who is well known for her role as Christine in “The Phantom of the Opera” — will be performing live as part of the Seth Rudetsky concert series.

- Where: The concert will stream at thesethconcertseries.com.

Met Opera
- What: The Metropolitan Opera is airing a different recording of a past production each night while it remains closed to the public. On Sunday it will stream a 2013 production of Verdi’s “Falstaff.”
- When: Each stream is available at 5:30 p.m. MDT until the following day at 4:30 p.m. MDT.
