Community Briefs
- Eric Lu, a student at West High School in Salt Lake City, is the winning essayist in the category of grades six through eight in the National Student Essay Competition and is a recipient of a $5,000 award from The Boston Globe Foundation. The competition is funded by the McCarthey Family Foundation, co-sponsored by the Boston Globe and Westminster College, and supported by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Reporter’s Committee for Freedom of the Press, and media outlets around the country. Over 200 students in grades six through university submitted essays examining the state of freedom of the press in the United States today in light of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Eric is in the ninth grade at West High and is also involved in Salt Lake County Youth Government and volunteering. Eric’s essay can be read at mklpr.com/national-student-essay-competition/winners.
- Downtown Salt Lake City will host “Open Street” events each Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening from 6-10 p.m. through Oct. 10. This will include expanded patio service areas for restaurants, as well as buskers and artist activations in various locations from Exchange Place to City Creek Center. Parts of Main Street will be closed to automobile traffic and open to pedestrians. - Jason F. Wright, author of “The Christmas Jars,” is inviting readers to submit stories to be featured in a new nonfiction book. “The Art of Mending Fences: True Stories of Exceptional Forgiveness” will be published by Ensign Peak in 2021. Readers are invited to submit stories of experiencing forgiveness — whether choosing to forgive or seeking forgiveness from someone else. Those who would like to share a story can do so at jasonfwright.com/mendingfences, and those whose stories are chosen will be contacted for an interview.
