Disneyland Resort

Disney CEO Bob Chapek said Tuesday that the new Avengers Campus experience will not open with the rest of the Disneyland park, according to the Orange County Register.

  • Rather, the Marvel-themed location will open later in 2021, he said.

What’s going on?

Chapek spoke at the Disney shareholder’s meeting on March 9 about the future of Disneyland. He said the park would likely reopen in April, but the Avengers Campuswhich had been due to open in July 2020 — would not open with California Adventure Park and Disneyland.

  • “At Disneyland Resort, the highly anticipated new Marvel-themed land Avengers Campus is currently scheduled to open later this year at Disney California Adventure,” he said, per Inside the Magic. “Guests will be able to sling webs like Spider-Man and see him soar through the air right before their eyes.”

More about Avengers Campus

The new Marvel location will include a number of attractions related to the Avengers, including a Spider-Man ride, a Doctor Strange show, an Ant-Man and the Wasp restaurant and a stunt show featuring other Marvel characters. There’s also the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride at the old Tower of Terror location.

  • In fact, Disney announced on March 11, 2020, it would open Avengers Campus in July 2020 — a crucial day in the coronavirus pandemic when Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson tested positive for the coronavirus and the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder game was canceled due to the virus (with the NBA suspending its season soon after). Disney Parks announced on March 12 — literally one day later — that it would close Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure from March 14 onward, delaying the opening of Avengers Campus.

Dave Bushore, vice president of franchise creative and marketing for Marvel Studios, said the campus will be perfect for all Marvel fans.

  • Avengers Campus will be a place where fans and guests can finally step into the universe they love, and stand alongside some of their favorite heroes,” he said. “The optimism inherent in Avengers Campus captures the diversity, power and teamwork these extraordinary characters possess, and now they come together to unite people from all over the world under one guiding principle: We are stronger together.”
