Steven Spielberg is teaming up with Seth Rogen for his next project, an untitled film loosely based on on the director’s childhood in Arizona.
According to People, Spielberg cast Rogen for a key role inspired by his favorite uncle.
Deadline reports that four-time Academy award nominee Michelle Williams is also on board to play a character who’s loosely based off of Spielberg’s mother.
The script for the untitled film is co-written by Spielberg and his frequent collaborator Tony Kushner, Collider reports. Kushner previously penned the screenplays to “Munich,” “Lincoln” and “West Side Story” for the director. According to IGN, the new project marks Spielberg’s first return to screenwriting in 20 years. His last feature screenwriting credit came in 2001 for the sci-fi drama “A.I. Artificial Intelligence.”
The Wrap reports that Spielberg is currently screen testing actors to find who will play the character inspired by a young Spielberg. According to the site, the film will follow the character’s evolving relationship with his parents throughout several decades.
The new project will begin production this summer, Deadline reports, to be released sometime in 2022. Spielberg’s next project to hit theaters is his remake of the classic 1961 movie musical “West Side Story.” The movie was scheduled to release last December, but the date was postponed as a result of the pandemic. “West Side Story” is slated for a December release.
