Warning: This article includes minor spoilers for the sixth episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”
We learned a little bit about what’s to come next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment.
The series finale of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” ended with John Walker (Wyatt Russell) taking on the identity of U.S. Agent. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) gives Walker an entirely new costume to wear, which he remarks as being “the same, but black” compared to his old Captain America suit.
- Then, Valentina explains that “things are about to get weird” and that when they do, the world won’t need a Captain America — they’ll need a U.S. Agent.
What does this mean?
It’s unclear what it means. But it’s hard not to think of the other half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “WandaVision” and the forthcoming “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” We know those two shows will connect and have to deal with alternate universes and different multiverses. There have been rumors that the next “Spider-Man” film will feature characters from other “Spider-Man” films like the ones with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — which suggests a crossing of multiverses, too. That’s not even addressing the upcoming “Eternals” films, which will delve into characters who are essentially Titans, like Thanos.
So yes, the upcoming slate of Marvel projects does seem weird. And it appears the MCU will become a little cosmic and weird. Why this matters for John Walker remains unclear. But it appears Valentina knows what’s going to happen next, and she will surely be a character to watch as we move forward into new Marvel territory.
