Director David Lynch has died at 78.

Lynch’s family confirmed the news through a post on his personal Facebook page.

The post said, “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.’”

According to Variety, in 2024, Lynch shared that he had been diagnosed with emphysema, a condition caused by years of smoking.

The director, known for his hauntingly surreal works, shared that the illness would confine him to his home.

Deadline reported Lynch was forced to evacuate his Los Angeles home due to the Sunset fire, which only worsened his fragile health.

The cause of death has not yet been stated.

His films “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive,” as well as the haunting television series “Twin Peaks,” have become filmmaking landmarks.

The Guardian described Lynch, writing, “He was the great American surrealist, but his vision was so distinctive that he became something other than that: a great fabulist, a great anti-narrative dissenter, his storylines splitting and swirling in non sequiturs and Escher loops.”

In August 2024, Lynch claimed on X he would “never retire,” according to Deadline.

Fans and admirers now remember him not just for his eccentric genius, but for the lasting impact of his work. His cinematic creations will continue to haunt and inspire for years to come.
