Earlier this year, Audible announced it would be bringing the “Harry Potter” series to life in a whole new way — not just as audiobooks, but as full-cast productions. Now, anticipation is growing as the company reveals a steady stream of casting updates. In just over a week, two rounds of actors were added to what is now a 200-plus–person ensemble.
Hagrid, Dobby and more
The Sept. 1 announcement revealed Mark Addy as Rubeus Hagrid, Daniel Mays as Dobby and Alex Hassell as Lucius Malfoy, with Sara and Avni Deshmukh rounding out the group as the Patil twins.
“Hagrid has a special place in the hearts of ‘Harry Potter’ fans worldwide, and it’s an honor to bring this cherished character’s lines to life,” Addy said in a statement. “The humanity and warmth Hagrid displays are integral to the stories, and listeners will be captivated by how this sonic world captures his larger-than-life presence and emotional depth.”
More stars join the cast
One week later, on Sept. 10, Audible revealed another wave of casting, adding even more familiar names.
- James McAvoy (“X-Men”) will play Mad-Eye Moody.
- Keira Knightley (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) is stepping into the role of Professor Umbridge.
- Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”) will voice Professor Lockhart.
“I am absolutely thrilled to bring the fiercely determined Mad-Eye Moody to life,” McAvoy said. “He’s a layered character, constantly shifting between battle-hardened intensity and unexpected moments of wisdom. Capturing his commanding presence was incredibly fun.”

The announcement also added:
- Ruth Wilson as Bellatrix Lestrange
- Iwan Rheon as Remus Lupin
- Simon Pegg as Arthur Weasley
- Leo Woodall as Bill Weasley
- Ambika Mod as Nymphadora Tonks
- Gemma Whelan as Professor Sprout
- Matt Berry as Sir Cadogan
Woodall said, “It is genuinely special to be part of bringing this world to life in a new way for listeners. From the stellar cast to the immersive sound world that Pottermore and Audible have put together, listeners everywhere will be given a new way to be transported directly into these celebrated stories.”
More casting on the horizon
According to Audible, the casting process is not yet complete, with additional announcements expected later this fall. In total, more than 200 actors will voice roles across the seven-book series.
