It’s a big year for “Gilmore Girls” fans.

The show that brought the eccentric but lovable world of Stars Hollow to life turns 25 this fall — and a documentary is in the works to celebrate.

But fans now have another reason to be excited: There was a “Gilmore Girls” reunion at the 77th Emmy Awards on Sunday.

‘Gilmore Girls’ reunion at the Emmys

Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel — the two main stars of “Gilmore Girls” — presented the category for outstanding writing for a comedy series at the Emmy Awards on Sunday.

As the “Gilmore Girls” theme song — Carole King’s “Where You Lead” — played, the two actors took the stage, standing on a set that resembled the Gilmores’ home in Stars Hollow.

“Twenty-five years ago, a show called ‘Gilmore Girls’ premiered and apparently took the season of fall hostage,” Graham said.

“In spite of our autumnal dominance, ‘Gilmore’ was actually a very small show,” Bledel said.

“ — Meaning we had no money," Graham interjected.

“Nothing,” Bledel added.

But one thing “Gilmore Girls” did have, the actors said, was great scripts.

“Terrifyingly lengthy scripts,” Bledel said, referencing the show’s fast-paced dialogue.

The “Gilmore Girls” stars proceeded to announce the winner of the category: the writing team for “The Studio.”

Sunday’s reunion between Bledel and Graham was significant — the last time the two actors appeared together in public was in April 2017, when they discussed if they were open to continuing “Gilmore Girls” as part of Deadline’s The Contenders panel, per US Weekly.

“I don’t know if there is a need to do more,” Graham said at the time, per Deadline. “I would never want it to feel like we overstayed our welcome. … There’s probably a way to keep these characters alive but I don’t know if that’s the best thing for them.”

‘Gilmore Girls’ is turning 25 — and there’s a new documentary to celebrate. Here’s what we know

What we know about the ‘Gilmore Girls’ documentary

It’s been nine years since the “Gilmore Girls” revival, “A Year in the Life,” hit Netflix — and almost 25 years since the original series debuted on the The WB Network.

A documentary called “Drink Coffee, Talk Fast” (it was previously going to be called “Searching for Stars Hollow”) is in progress that features insights from crew members, writers and directors, although there are notable absences — including Graham and Bledel.

“The interviews that we’ve already conducted with the cast have been a delight,” director Meghna Balakumar said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve shot more than 100 hours of footage and have already unearthed stories, commentary, critiques, and more. And we’re continuing to shoot more interviews in the coming months to present the most complete, full and truly new story of the show’s impact and legacy that is only possible at this historical moment.”

Why is ‘Gilmore Girls’ so popular?

When “Gilmore Girls” hit two decades of popularity in 2020, Patterson spoke with the Deseret News about the cultural phenomenon the show has become.

“It’s a nice surprise,” the actor said. “Things usually just sort of come and go — that’s the nature of the business no matter how hot a show they are. ... And then maybe 50 years later, they come back and there’s the nostalgia play. But not only does (‘Gilmore Girls’) not go away, it just grows and grows and grows and grows. I could not have predicted that — I don’t think anybody could have.”

Patterson praised the show’s cast — which features a wide variety of quirky, well-developed characters — and the Stars Hollow setting that served as the perfect backdrop for the series.

“There’s always going to be an appetite for what I consider to be the happiest place on Earth — Stars Hollow," he said. “At the end of the day, we’re making something that makes people very happy, and that’s a good business to be in.”
