Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel will return to America’s television screen Tuesday night after being indefinitely suspended by ABC for comments he made regarding Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin. Kirk was killed at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
Despite the show’s resurrection from suspension, many affiliates will continue to boycott “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for its host’s controversial remarks.
After the ABC-owned Walt Disney Company released a statement that Kimmel would return, its affiliates, including Nexstar Media Group, Inc., which owns a significant portion of local ABC stations, issued a press release saying it would not air the show on Tuesday.
“We made a decision last week to preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s ‘ill-timed and insensitive’ comments at a critical time in our national discourse.”
Nexstar owns ABC4 in Salt Lake City — meaning tonight’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will not air on television locally in Utah.
How to watch Kimmel if your local channel is Nexstar or Sinclair
For viewers who wish to watch the reboot but won’t have a local station airing it, Hulu will stream it after the show airs, or live streaming options are available using Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV or FUBO, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Last Tuesday, Kimmel said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
He also made fun of President Donald Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s assassination.
“(Trump is) at the fourth stage of grief: construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish,” Kimmel said.
Nexstar’s statement continued, “We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve. In the meantime, we note that ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets.”
According to the media group’s website, it is the country’s largest local television broadcasting group, reaching 220 million people.
